The Rafter or Speed square is an exceptionally versatile tool, offered at reasonable cost too. Most joiners will have one in their tool kit as they are that handy.
They allow –
- Quick marking of 45°and 90° straight lines. Just hook the lipped straight edge over your timber and slide to the desired point and scribe. Perfect perpendicular and 45° lines every time.
- The same process can be used to guide circular, jigsaws etc, while (carefully) holding the rafter square in position.
- Roof pitches can be quickly found, using the hip valley and common top cuts graduations.
